Aimable, a middle-aged baker, arrives in a small Provencal village with his much younger wife Genevieve, and the town takes to him and his bread right away. When Genevieve leaves with the local marquis's young chauffeur, Aimable stops baking, and the villagers set their quarrels aside to bring her home. Stephen Schwartz and Joseph Stein based it on Marcel Pagnol's 1938 French film.
