Start ratingParis, 1482: Quasimodo is the deformed bell ringer of Notre Dame, kept in the cathedral tower by the archdeacon Claude Frollo, and both men are drawn to Esmeralda, a Romani dancer they see at the Feast of Fools. Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz wrote the score, and the show draws on Victor Hugo's novel as well as the 1996 Disney film, following the novel toward a much darker ending. It premiered in Berlin in 1999 as Der Gloeckner von Notre Dame, and an English revision with a new book by Peter Parnell played La Jolla Playhouse and Paper Mill Playhouse in 2014 and 2015.
