The Lieutenant is a sung-through rock opera that follows Lieutenant William Calley's path from Army recruit to his 1971 court-martial for the 1968 My Lai massacre, in which US soldiers killed hundreds of unarmed Vietnamese civilians. It was developed at the Queens Playhouse in New York in 1974 before a brief run on Broadway the following year, where it received four Tony nominations.
