Start ratingThis is a musical revue with no plot or named characters: a series of vignettes and story songs about the Black American experience in the early 1970s, touching on tenement life, student protests, Black power and feminism. The score mixes gospel, jazz, funk, soul and calypso. Micki Grant wrote the music, lyrics and book, and the Broadway production made Vinnette Carroll the first Black woman to direct a Broadway show.
