An opera by George Gershwin with a libretto by DuBose Heyward and lyrics by Heyward and Ira Gershwin, based on Heyward's novel and play Porgy. Set in the Black tenement of Catfish Row in Charleston, South Carolina, it follows the disabled beggar Porgy and his love for Bess, who is tied to the violent Crown and the dealer Sportin' Life.
