Ipi Tombi is a South African musical revue about a young Zulu man who leaves his village and his wife to find work in the gold mines of Johannesburg. It is built around traditional South African songs and dances, and it was a popular success in South Africa and abroad through the 1970s. Anti-apartheid protesters picketed its 1977 Broadway run, arguing the show gave audiences a false, sanitized picture of Black life under apartheid.
