Start ratingBuilt from the writings of New York City schoolchildren collected in a 1969 anthology, the musical has no single plot. Songs and scenes drawn from the students' own accounts of home, school and the world outside form a series of vignettes about growing up in the city's poorest neighborhoods. It opened off-Broadway in 1970 before transferring to Broadway, with music by Gary William Friedman and lyrics by Will Holt.
