Music & lyricsRichard Rodgers
Book by Samuel A. Taylor
David, a Pulitzer Prize winning American novelist, and Barbara, an American fashion model, meet and fall in love in Paris. He asks her to return with him to his hometown in Maine, but the two conclude that a small American town in 1962 will not accept them together and part instead. The show never states outright that David is white and Barbara is Black, a choice the original production kept deliberately unspoken.
