Michael R. Jackson's metafictional musical follows Usher, a Black queer writer working a day job he hates while trying to write a musical about a Black queer writer writing a musical. It puts his self-doubt and the punishing voices in his own head on stage. The show won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Musical.
