A South African musical by Mbongeni Ngema with songs by Ngema and Hugh Masekela, set among Black students under apartheid. It follows Sarafina, a Soweto schoolgirl drawn into the 1976 student uprising against the forced use of Afrikaans in schools. It reached Broadway in 1988 and was later made into a film.
