Mame Dennis is a free-spirited New York socialite whose orphaned nephew Patrick comes to live with her in 1928. She raises him on her own philosophy of living life fully, and the story follows the pair through the 1929 stock market crash and into Patrick's adulthood, when his disapproving fiancee's family threatens to come between them.
